Adelaide is the youngest of my first (albeit brief) roommate in college. Sometimes it’s startling to realize that we’ve all come so far that not too long from now we’ll be sending our own children off to the places we all met. My own is already nearly 8 and I find myself more and more often returning to old photographs to find record of this little person that used to be is continually transformed in front of me. To be sudden confronted with the changes of year or more all at once really emphasizes the incremental changes at home that we don’t always notice at the time…

Ida was a pretty challenging portrait. She is extremely camera shy as well as very kinetic. I attempted a portrait when I was in Portland but I was very unhappy with how I Did so when she was in town this fall to visit we tried again. I am very grateful for her willingness to sit for me a second time and I hope that even for someone who “hates every picture of themselves ever” that she is happy with the result. I think it was worth the wait.

Last week I received in the mail one Intel Core duo Mac Mini (circa 2006 or so). Over the next 9 weeks I will be transforming it into a working photobooth. Since I am not what one would call “handy with tools” I sat down with my dad over the weekend and roughly sketched out what I needed it to do:

provide access to the front and back of the enclosure,

provide keyboard space to work with the photobooth on site,

switch from a standard enclosed photobooth to a wide flexible space photobooth (in it’s premiere incarnation I will set it up to use a flexible shooting space rather than having a photobooth but I wanted that to be an option),

take n number of photos in sequence with a y interval of seconds between shots every time a button is pushed,

use either built in florescent lighting or an optionally attached strobe/umbrella set up, and

finally: look classy.

Click to embiggen!

So I was pretty excited when I got back today these rough sketches that transformed my concept into something much more tangible. I’ll be posting the project progress here as I make it and eventually I’ll probably gather everything up into a single How-To post once the process is complete: Excitement abounds!

In realated news starting this summer I will begin offering a photobooth as an added service to event photography!
